Antoinette Hérivel
I was born in the UK. My family are from the channel island of Jersey where I spent my childhood summers. I taught in the island for a few years before moving to Saskatchewan in 1967. I lived in various rural communities in Saskatchewan and Alberta for about 20 years, teaching and raising a family. I have lived in Regina since 1989.

I began to study art in London England as part of my teacher training. After a gap I enroled in painting classes at the former Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts. I continued my studies at the University of Regina, graduating with a BFA in 1986. In the early 1990's I became interested in the Arts Education programme at the University of Regina and completed an MEd in 1996 through the Faculty of Education. In the Fall of 2001 I traveled to Italy and Greece for post graduate studies in painting, drawing and art history. I continue to find learning opportunities through professional workshops and short courses, the most recent being a painting retreat in Wells, B.C. led by Canadian artist Tony Urquart in July 2003.

I am primarily a painter but my work has included drawing, performance and painted decorative objects such as furniture . I have frequently been drawn to narrative forms of art making inspired by a variety of sources including observation of life around me, childhood memories , autobiography, family history, literature and mythology. My intent has been to create a certain personal mythology, weaving strands of fact and fiction about my domestic world and that of my childhood. Part of my intention has explored ways to find a balance and connection between past and present.

My subject matter has ranged through landscape, figurative compositions inspired from family photographs and events, the culture and mythology of gardens and more recently still life paintings combining personal objects , food , cooking and dining utensils. Subject matter whether realistic or non-objective is a way of communicating ideas , but more importantly, the focus and discourse of my work is about the discipline of painting. My interest lies in examining questions of change, decay and the passing of time. I think this is probably my way of placing the past in context, whilst dealing with issues of aging and change in my own life.

I have exhibited mostly in Saskatchewan, in solo and group exhibitions, but also in other parts of Canada and the U.S . My work is part of private collections in Canada and the UK; public collections including the Saskatchewan Arts Board , the Canada Council Art Bank and that of H.R.H. Prince Edward

I have been involved with a wide range of arts activities ranging from teaching, to collaboration with dancers and designing theatrical props for children’s theatre. I have served as an advocate and support for various arts organizations and endeavours. I have taught and adjudicated in various capacities and have given workshops and classes to adults and children. For several years, I worked as an artist in schools through the international programme Learning Through the Arts. Currently I am a sessional lecturer and practicum advisor for the Arts Education programme at the University of Regina.
