Artist Statement - Harmony Series:
My recent work is the result of profound influence by traditional Chinese Art and philosophy on my
early training, combined with maximum exposure to Western Art.
It is natural that I attempt to explore the relationship of cultural duality through joining of the opposites and through juxtaposition of Eastern and Western aesthetic.
Images
for my paintings are primary of natural world, which I employ to explore the contrast between Eastern and Western culture, traditional and contemporary techniques, fine and rough textures, yin and yang, and separation and integration. At the same time, I
try to keep the harmony of the contrasting elements with the same themes and inspiration.
By applying multi-layers of paint and fine brush technique, I try to transform one section of the canvas into a style that is reminiscent of an old 12th
century Chinese master, with the illusion of aging paper cracking on the surface. Meanwhile, on the other side, an image usually of floral is painted against the rough textural backgrounds, by loading the brush with vibrant pigments squeezed directly
from the tube onto the media to achieve the vivid colors and to capture its essence and freshness.. I also incorporate patterns of decorative motifs on the border of the canvas as a way of framing the painting. Finally, I express my thoughts and ideas
from the image to the viewer through the art of calligraphy and seals as it has been done for centuries in Chinese art. This creative process gives me great pleasure.
The layout of this hybrid painting is inspired by the traditional hand scroll
format of Chinese painting, and the media is Western materials, namely acrylic paint on canvas. It is just like looking at the old as seen through the new.
