Jordan was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. By age 15 he was already employed as a redcap for Canadian Pacific Railways and at 18 was a brakeman riding freight trains in Saskatchewan. Riding through untouched prairie towns aboard an 1898 caboose
greatly affected his view of life. He worked for Canadian Pacific throughout his training at the Fine Art faculty at the University of Manitoba where he graduated in 1979.
Following his graduation he left the railroad and made his career as a
studio artist. He has created a personal iconography in his ceramic figures which embody his own feeling of nostalgia for that time when "magic" abounded. Though humorous in nature, the sculpture of Jordan Van Sewell is a thoughtful commentary on life as
he sees it. While being entertained by his work, the viewer is challenged to look for the message it portrays.
