Jim Poitras was born in 1952 at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, of Cree, Saulteaux, and Metis descent. Jim's awareness of his heritage grew slowly over the years after his upbringing in a non-native foster home in rural Saskatchewan, and in his mid-thirties he
focussed on a love of aboriginal art. He is self-taught in several art media, and is inspired by First Nations music and particularly the drum beat of Mother Earth speaking to her people.
"Our singing and music not only tell stories, but are a
celebration of life itself," Jim says. "They are truly a gift from the Creator, and the inspiration for paintings comes from this source."
