Gaston Rebry (1933-2007)
Born in Belgium, Gaston Rebry came to Canada at the age of nineteen. After studying art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal, Rebry settled in the Saint Boniface area of Quebec.
Surrounded by the endless
beauty of the Saint Boniface countryside, Rebry devoted his career to painting landscapes. Although he enjoyed creating sketches outdoors, he preferred to paint in the comfort of his studio. Doing so, he believed, allowed him the freedom to choose
forms and colours that suited his constructed images, unrestricted by the realities of the actual scenes. It was an approach to painting that produced technically strong compositions imbued with vibrant colours and graced with the subtle variations of
shadow and light.
Rebry's work is in public, corporate, and private collections throughout Canada and internationally. One of his paintings was presented to Pope John-Paul II by Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.
Gaston Rebry died
in January 2007.
