Erica Grimm-Vance was born in Regina and was the Riddell Award Graduate in Fine Arts from the University of Regina in 1982. Over the past two decades, Erica has been exploring the relationship between medium and meaning in order to "...make visible the
invisible" (Paul Klee) and in particular to explore issues of mystery, meaning and spirituality. Her recent work uses the ancient medium of encaustic (beeswax and oil glazes) juxtaposed with hard-edged planes of steel and gold. The tensions of
ancient/modern, organic/inorganic, light and dark, grace and gravity (Simone Weil) convey meaning equally with the figural elements. There is a balance of weight and a sense of mystical soraing in the falling figures of the Memory Traces series as well
as in Erica's floral and still life pieces.
Erica continues to dazzle collectors with each new work and we share in her exhilaration over the discovery of encaustic and the use of gold and steel.
