The stunning landscapes created by Eltje Degenhart are beautifully executed and harmonious. Quite impressionistic in style, many of his paintings portray prairie space – from wide open summer wheat fields to enchantingly peaceful winter ski trails.

As Eltje has said, “My issues are with prairie space and the dominance of the horizons. The power of colour to create that space, and its psychological impact on the viewer are important to me. The subtle mood created through the use of both muted and vivid colour is an essential component of my paintings.”

“I strive for a quality of atmosphere, light and reflection, the latter in particular in my water landscapes. I believe that when I paint I act as a filter through which my prairie experiences flow, rather than as a straight illustrator of exact information. Hence, the abstract, interpretive style in my work.”

“My primary source of inspiration is the southeastern area of Saskatchewan, which constantly provides an endless selection of subject matter. The changing seasons, and the varied terrain are a source of subtle and profound wonder. I enjoy playing and experimenting with the underpainting, and use digital photographs for reference only.”

Although I recommend that my students experience painting on location, I am a studio painter. I enjoy the predictability of the light and temperature, and it affords the opportunity to have several paintings on the go.

Eltje Degenhart was born in Holland in 1946, and his family emigrated to Canada in 1951. While growing up in Weyburn and the Moose Mountain region, Eltje demonstrated an early aptitude for the creative arts as a love and respect of southeastern Saskatchewan. Mr. Degenhart began his formal art studies at the Alberta College of Art. From there, he moved to the University of Regina, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education while studying under artists such as Ted Godwin, Joe Fafard, and Art McKay.

In 2001, Eltje Degenhart retired from teaching after 27 years and devoted himself to painting full time.
