The idea for this ceramic exhibition came to Cara Gay Driscoll when she was studying the bible and discovered that although women are mentioned we are not told very much about them as individual people. Rather women were usually referred to in the context of whose wife, mother or sister they were. It became evident to Cara that many of these women had not been given a voice. Thus the exhibition, “Forgotten Women of the Bible” began to take shape.

Each hand-coiled vessel in the exhibition represents a woman from the bible. For example, “Lot’s Wife”, represents Lot’s nameless wife who defies authority and is turned into a pillar of salt. At the bottom of each vessel is text that tells the story of each of these women, “But Lot’s wife, behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.” The purpose of Cara’s vessels is to visually express the identities of these forgotten women. Cara hopes to encourage discussion which might deconstruct some of the myths surrounding women of the bible.
