Zhong-Ru Huang

Born in Guangzhou, China, Zhong-Ru came from an artistic family. He started drawing at the age of 5 and won several prizes from junior art competitions held in his city. From 1975-1985, his works were shown at juried art exhibitions at the municipal, provincial and national levels in China. He won the top prize in both 1980 and 1983. In 1980, Ru became a member of the Chinese Artists Association, Guangdong Branch.

Ru studied painting and drawing at the Guangzhou Fine Arts Institute (1983) and received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco (1986-1988). He then reunited with his family in Canada and began his career as a professional artist.

Since moving to Canada, he has embraced the spirit of the prairies. The fresh air and sunshine, the open space and living sky, the landscape and wildlife, the people’s past and present lives are revealed vividly in his paintings.

Besides being an easel painter, Ru has completed a number of mural commissions, including a life-sized figurative mural for the Provincial Museum of Alberta, Edmonton in 1997.

In 2005, he was invited by the Chinese Culture Promotion Society of Guangdong and two other art galleries/museums to have an art exhibition with his brother Zhong-Yang. The exhibition, called One Heart, Two Countries, toured three cities in China over two months. At the same time, his art book was published by a renowned publishing house in China.
