Steve Coffey Biography

Steve Coffey has been an integral part of the Canadian art scene for many years. After completing a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1990 at the University of Regina, Steve practised formalism as a metal sculptor in Edmonton and Central Alberta. Eventually, he gave in to his love of drawing and representation and was seduced by the immediacy and challenges of oil paint. He began exploring the medium full-time in 1995, influenced by such artists as the Group of Seven, Emily Carr and Alex Colville.

"My work is elemental," he has noted, "with a focus on nature and the forces with which humanity has to contend. I search for a distinctive atmosphere from the immensity and grandeur of the plains to the human mark etched upon it. With both a plaintive and expressive palette of light and movement I draw both from my past—a process I call 'Memory Polaroids'—and from the present day of all that surrounds me. My medium is oil on canvas."

Steve has exhibited extensively and his paintings can be found in numerous private and public collections throughout North America, Europe and China. He has curated travelling exhibitions, created large-scale public sculptures, taught college, and conducted many workshops and art residencies.

Steve is also a well-known western Canadian singer-songwriter with a number of recordings that have received critical acclaim. He and his band, "The Lokels", perform regularly and can be heard on the radio. Their music has been described as "prairie roots folk rock fusion." (source: www.steve-coffey.com)

As well, he has also dabbled in films, one of which was purchased by the Canadian arts and entertainment channel Bravo! in 2007.

Steve makes his home in Vulcan, Alberta with his partner Barbara and their two daughters, Lydia and Grace.
