It is with great sadness that we announce the recent passing of a Saskatchewan artist and friend, Joan Rankin, at the age of 86.

Joan built a professional art practice that spanned more than six decades. She was a student of renowned artists (Kenderdine, Lochhead, Cage, Gaucher) and legendary art critics (Greenburg, Alloway), and was a contemporary and friend of members of the Regina Five. Joan’s wide-ranging interests led her to explore a diversity of media, including drawing, painting, collage, clay, photography, fibre, and stained glass. Her work can be found in private and public collections across Canada.

Joan was an active member of the arts community in Saskatchewan. She taught evening and summer art classes, served on a number of boards, and was instrumental in developing the public art gallery in Moose Jaw.

Our gallery has had the privilege of representing Joan and her work since 2007. We are also fortunate to share a close connection with Joan’s children. Michael Rankin, her son, is an accomplished fine art photographer and has been the head preparator of our framing department for many years. We represent her daughter Susan Rankin, an incredible blown glass artist who lives and works in Ontario. To Michael, Susan and their families, we extend our deepest sympathies.

Joan was a guiding light in the development of contemporary art in our province. We will always remember her remarkable talent and her boundless enthusiasm for creating visual art. We will miss her.
