Erica Grimm Biography

Erica Grimm, PhD is Associate Professor and Chair of the Art + Design Department, School of the Arts, Media and Culture at Trinity Western University. Over the past two decades, Erica has been exploring the relationship between medium and meaning in order to "make visible the invisible" (Paul Klee) and in particular to explore issues of mystery, meaning and spirituality.

Her recent work uses the ancient medium of encaustic (beeswax and oil glazes) juxtaposed with hard-edged planes of steel and gold. The tensions of ancient/modern, organic/inorganic, light/dark, grace and gravity (Simone Weil) convey meaning equally with the figural elements. There is a balance of weight and a sense of mystical soaring in the falling figures of the Memory Traces series as well as in Erica's floral and still life pieces.
